Following my dear S-rah's lead, I figured it's about time for myself to start a blog on my newest and mightiest of adventures. I started the big advent. on September 11th. We packed up the good ol' Ford Taury and away myself and the mods went. Fortunately as I've had a travelling soul for the past couple of years, I haven't managed to acquire many 'things' so my car held my clothes, an ikea drawer set, a snowboard and a guitar. We took a route through Flint Michigan and back up to Sault St Marie. We stopped at my aunt and uncle's in Thunder bay for a quick visit. That was our main stop and we drove between 8 and 12 hours a day on average. The drive was a little too long for myself. Come the 4th day I was ready to arrive and we were only slightly over halfway there. Once we arrived in Northern BC the drive was quite enjoyable because of the beauty. We saw wild buffalo, horses, caribou and a black bear. We arrived in Whitehorse, Yukon on Friday Sept 17th and was I ever thankful to get out of the car for good.
Upon arrival I met my roommate Fiona. She's already proven to be wonderful. She's been really supportive in helping me adjust to such a new environment. I moved into my room, which was formerly lived in by a 6 year old little gal. The walls are pink and purple with Hannah Montana curtains. Really... what more could I ask for. The trailer park is quite a nice/ new one. So I'm happy where I'm living.
I started work on Tuesday after I arrived. It was the most overwhelming day that I think I've ever had. The name of the agency I'm working for is Many Rivers. I'm one of the youth outreach counsellors. I really didn't know what I was getting into when I took this job. Apparently I'm a full-on counsellor. It was extremely overwhelming the first day because everyone else in the office is quite qualified, education wise. They all have masters in counselling and I don't even have an undergrad in counselling! I had one counselling class throughout my university career, but unfortunately it fell on the same day as the RANCH therefore it was rarely attended :S. Anyways, my nerves have cooled and as soon as I get my head wrapped around all of my responsibilities I think that I'm going to fall in love with this job. I counsel youth in need and get to attend all sorts of youth events, with hopes to have them come in for counselling if they feel it's needed. I also partake in the outreach van. We drive around to different areas of the city and hand out food, clothes, condoms and items for safe drug use. I have my own office which is pretty exciting. It even has a balcony looking over the mountains :). Lucky. Everyone in my office is awesome, all with a great sense of humor. Two of the younger lads are taking me under their wings and introducing me to their friends as I don't know many yet.
I'm ready to start making friends so I have more people to hang out with here, but everyone is extremely friendly... so I don't think it'll be too tough. I'm going to attend sunday night drop in ultimate frisbee, I'm joining an indoor soccer league and I'm starting a yoga class. Overall life is good. I'm thinking of all you who are attending Guelph homecoming and I hope you all have a drink for myself, Srah and Colleen. I can easily speak for the both of them in saying that we all wish we could be there partying with you all.
